Arab boycott office postpones meeting
Regional-Israel, Economics, 4/23/2001

An official at the Arab League office in Damascus said that the meeting of the Arab boycott of Israel which was due on Sunday ( yesterday) in Damascus was postponed because the needed number for convening the meeting did not confirm participation.

The official said the meeting would not be held on Sunday because it needed to have attendants representing two thirds of the Arab states which was not available as several Arab states approved the meeting while others were late in sending their replies in due time, noting the great efforts to convene the meeting of the boycott office whose activities were frozen since 1993.

In February, the Syrian official daily Tishreen said that the office extended invitations to liaison officers in all the Arab states to take part in the meeting to be held on April 22 in Damascus after discussions were made to reactivate the boycott office during the Arab summit which was held in Amman on March 27 and 28, at the request of Syria.

Worthy mentioning that the central bureau for the boycott of Israel which was established by the Arab league in 1951, with Damascus as headquarters with a main task of releasing lists of companies every six months. These lists, known as the " black list" of Israeli companies were boycotted at "a first class boycott" and foreign companies dealing with Israel were boycotted at "a second class boycott."

However, after the Gulf war in 1991 and the launching of the peace process in Madrid, most of the Arab states gave up the second- class boycott, as a subjugation to the American pressures.
