Passports withdrawn from leading figures of the People's Congress
Sudan, Politics, 4/23/2001

The Sudanese daily "al-Share' al-Seyasi" ( political street) has stated that the Sudanese government is determined to withdraw the nationality and passports from several leaderships of the People's Congress, led by Hassan al-Turabi, currently detained after the escalation of their activities abroad and inside the country and has become a threat to national security in Sudan.

The paper added, according to well-informed sources that this decision will cover Ali al-Haj, Ibrahim al-Sanousi, Omar Ibrahim al-Turabi and al-Mahjoub Abdul Salaam, most of them carry diplomatic or official passports.

The paper continued that this measure may help to obstruct the way before the People's Congress, whose leaders had said that they were assigned to leave Sudan officially to lead opposition work, abroad.

The paper continued that contacts have been made with a well-known merchant to define his position towards financing this anti- government activity.

On Saturday, the People's Congress party announced that the Sudanese security forces arrested on Thursday two of its leaders, namely Bader Eddine Taha and Dahab Muhammad Saleh, who have been wanted since the arrest of al-Turabi in February this year.
