Jordan seeks importing drinking water from Syria
Jordan-Syria, Economics, 4/18/2001

Jordan is reportedly trying to obtain drinking water from Syria to honor growing needs in next summer season, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.

Semi-official Al-Rai newspaper Wednesday quoted secretary general of Jordan valley authority, Dhafer Al-Alem, as saying "Jordanian-Syrian talks are ongoing to have quantities of Syrian drinking waters in Amman next summer."

Jordan suffers shortage in water used for drinking, agriculture and industry. The shortage is attributed to growing population, increasing agricultural lands and development of industrial and economic activities.

Water shortage is also due to huge consumption of underground water. A program was launched to develop and run water resources aimed at increasing efficiency of rationalizing water in all sectors.

The program also aims at recycling more water to be used in agriculture and industry.
