Emergency meeting by Arab League Council within days
Regional-Israel, Politics, 4/18/2001
An Arab diplomatic source told Al-Ahram that the Arab League Council would hold an emergency meeting on the level of representatives to discuss Israeli violation of the Lebanese territories and the impact of the Israeli aggression on a Syrian radar site in Lebanon three days ago.
The Arab league meeting comes upon requests by Lebanon and Syria.
Lebanon called for holding an emergency meeting of the Arab League Council to discuss Israeli aggression and implementation of the Arab summit that was held in Amman last month.
Lebanese Foreign Minster Mahmoud Hamoud considered the Israeli attack on Syria and Lebanon as an assault on all Arab countries.
Mahmoud Hamoud held a series of marathon meetings with Arab ambassadors accredited to Lebanon to explain Lebanon' stance regarding the Israeli attack on a Syrian military site in Lebanon.
Hamoud described the attack as dangerous and part of the continued Israeli attack on Lebanese sovereignty, independence, airspace, water and territorial integrity.
The Lebanese Minister said that he sent a message to the United Nations Secretary-General, including details of the Israeli attacks on Lebanon and stressing the importance of the United Nations role in deterring Israel.
AL Ahram learned that Syria had requested holding an emergency meeting on the level of permanent representatives to discuss the Israeli aggression.
Meanwhile, Syrian Minister of Information Adnan Omar lashed out at the pro-Israel US stances underlining that unless a green light was given by the US, Israel would never launch its constant aggressions and undermine the Middle East peace process.
In press statements to MENA Tuesday, Omran said the US, as a permanent member of the Security Council, should be more committed to UN Charter.
He voiced hope that the US Administration would reconsider the regional imbalance and threatened that Arab states might be obliged to change their policies over the US.
"If the US is not able to shoulder responsibility over the process, it should, at least, refrain from providing the aggressor with military, political and financial support," he said.
"The latest aggression on a Syrian military post in Lebanon was anticipated in the light of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's electoral programme and statement which are based on extremism and rejection of peace efforts," Omran said.
He praised the Arab stance over the recent Israeli escalation against Syria and Lebanon.
He underlined the need for more positive resolutions that would send a warning message to Israel: your actions are dangerous threats to the future of regional peace.
