Egypt slams the Israeli attacks on Lebanon
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 4/17/2001
Egypt has denounced the Israeli aggression against the Syrian unit stationed in the Lebanese Bekaa, expressing its solidarity with the brotherly Syrian and Lebanese peoples in the face of these events.
Egypt has also expressed its opposition to any attempt aiming at aborting the peace process.
Egypt has called on Israel to refrain from those practices, to observe the agreements which have been reached and to respond to efforts aiming at resuming peace negotiations.
The Presidency of the Republic issued a statement yesterday urging all international powers concerned with achieving peace, maintaining security and stability, to shoulder their responsibilities in facing this Israeli aggression which threatens the positions in the region and augur ill for the peace process.
The Presidential statement said as all peace loving powers were looking forward to positive initiatives which could save the peace process and break its deadlock caused by the Israeli anti-peace policies, we were surprised by the new Israeli escalation in the form of a surprise and unjustified attack against the Syrian contingent stationed in Lebanese Bekaa, causing many losses and causalities.
The statement said the Arab Republic of Egypt condemns this aggression against an Arab country which neither launched any attack nor violated the rules of law and international legitimacy.
The statement said Egypt called on Israel to refrain from the use of force for intimidating the parties involved in the peace process.
Egypt also urged Israel to respond to the efforts which are aimed at resuming the peace negotiations according to terms of reference.
Meantime, Egypt's Foreign Minister Amr Moussa reiterated Egypt's condemnation of Israel's attack on a Syrian army unit in Lebanon earlier on Monday. He said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon does not seem to have any intention for making peace in the region.
"The peace process should not be a cover for such reckless and extremist policies," he said.
"The peace process, should it resume, must restart on a genuine basis and not be used to cover the construction of settlement and humiliation of Palestinians," he said.
Moussa referred to Ebeid's talks in Kuwait as important.
He said they will deal with bilateral relations and assessing the situation in the region as regards the situation in the Gulf and the Arab-Israeli conflict, "which used to be called the Middle East peace process or the situation in the Gulf."
