UAE, Egypt call on the international community to protect the Palestinians
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 4/17/2001

The United Arab Emirates UAE deputy prime minister Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed al-Nahyan has stressed that the acts of repression conducted by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinians close all doors before the Middle East peace process.

During his meeting on Monday with the British ambassador to the UAE Patrick Nixon, Sheikh Sultan called for an effective role during this phase in order to salvage the Middle East peace process, holding the greater states the responsibility of defending the international legitimacy resolutions and the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent states with Jerusalem as a capital.

The UAE deputy prime minister noted the possibility of expanding the cycle of war launched by the Israeli forces against the Palestinian people. A matter which will lead to re-mixing of papers in this sensitive part of the world.

Meantime, both the UAE and Egypt have stressed that just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East is not attainable without restoring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and the establishment of their independent state and Jerusalem as a capital and the return back of the Golan and other Lebanese territories.

During the meeting held between the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed al-Nahyan with the Egyptian foreign minister Amr Moussa on Sunday, the two countries called on the international community "to immediately interfere in order to protect the Palestinian people against the Israeli brutal practices carried out by all types of weapons and the killing of besieged people who are looking forward to restore back their legitimate rights."

The two sides called on the ME peace process cosponsors to carry out an effective role for implementing UN resolutions 242, 338 and 425 provide for complete Israeli withdrawal from all Arab territories occupied in 1967.

They held Israel responsible for the deteriorated conditions in the Palestinian territories and called for halting "the brutal practices against the Palestinian people and to return back to the table of negotiations."
