Mubarak - Gaddafi talks cover Palestinian issue, African Union Institutions
Egypt-Libya, Politics, 4/14/2001

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi held Thursday important talks in Tripoli.

The talks focussed on the Middle East peace process in the light of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, the resolutions of recent Arab Summit in Amman, the executive steps of establishing the African Union's institutions, the joint ventures and the Egyptian-Libyan relations.

"Mubarak and Gaddafi showed determination to convene the Joint Higher Committee as soon as possible and activate cooperation in projects that are ready underway between the two states," said Minister of Information Safwat Al-Sherif.

"A number of meetings between Ministers from both sides were held on the sidelines of the Summit meeting between Mubarak and Gaddafi," said Sherif.

"The Ministers of Health discussed cooperation in the field of pharmaceutical research and likewise the Ministers of Petroleum took up integration in the relevant domain," added Sherif.

"In the field of electricity a date has been set to inaugurate the power link-up project that ties Egypt, Libya and extends as far as the Arab Maghreb region," he said.

In statements following Mubarak-Gaddafi plenary session of talks, El-Sherif said that Mubarak's visit to Libya reflected the two countries' integration and their future endeavors towards Arab and African actions.

The two leaders' talks covered a number of important issues pertaining to activating resolutions of the Arab Summit as well as preparing for the economic conference which was approved by Amman summit, in addition to studying the proposals floated by the Libyan Leader in the closed-door session during the summit.

He pointed out that Mubarak approved the documents of ratification of the African Union constituent law in order to be ratified by the People's Assembly.

"The Middle East issue, the situation in the Palestinian territories and coordination regarding Arab and African issues imposed themselves on the two leaders' talks," the Minister added.

Egypt's Ambassador to Libya Hani Khalaf said following the departure of Mubarak and his accompanying delegation that the Libyan side issued prompt directives to solve all complaints of Egyptians working in Libya.
