Egypt calls for a firm stand against nuclear weapons
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 4/9/2001
The international disarmament body of 2001 will meet on Monday at the UN headquarters in New York to discuss means of achieving nuclear disarmament.
The session will also study confidence-building measures in traditional weapons issue.
Egypt's permanent delegate to the UN Ambassador Ahmed Abul Gheit said that the disarmament body is entrusted with dealing with various issues of disarmament.
"It helps present proposals on necessary measures for eliminating nuclear weapons for being the most dangerous ones," he said.
"Egypt chaired the session of 1999 which endorsed guidelines of setting up areas free from nuclear weapons upon arrangements by countries concerned," Abul Gheit said.
"Issues of nuclear disarmament will be given special importance during the body's meetings," he added.
"The meetings will discuss Egypt's firm stance as regards clearing the Middle East of all weapons of mass destruction on the basis of President Hosni Mubarak's initiative launched in April 1990, "he said.
"Issues of confidence-building measures in the field of traditional weapons are being discussed within disarmament issues for being precautionary measures in hotbed areas with the aim of boosting peace," he said.
The Non-Alignment Movement states are currently preparing for the meetings and working for adopting a collective stance that takes into consideration their firm attitude as regards the nuclear disarmament and DURBAN summit document on nuclear disarmament and traditional weapons, he added.
