Annan praises Egypt success in enhancing child's rights
Egypt, Culture, 4/7/2001

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan praised Egypt's success in enhancing the child's rights.

Annan expressed his hope that President Hosni Mubarak would accept his invitation to a General Assembly session on promoting children's rights in September.

"President Mubarak's participation will enrich the extraordinary session expected to examine the national achievements in the children's field, the enhancement of the child's capabilities and the protection of his rights," he added.

The extraordinary session, slated for September 19-22, is to follow up the recommendations of the international child summit.

Annan lauded Egypt's achievements in boosting children's rights and the protection of their dignity.

Egypt's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ahmed Abul-Gheit Thursday stressed the importance of holding this special General Assembly session to affirm the political will of the countries in protecting and promoting the child mentally, Physically and emotionally.

"The children of today are the leaders of the future, and against this backdrop, it becomes a social and economic requirement for each country in the world regardless of its culture, economic growth and scientific progress, to take special care of its children," he added.

Abul-Gheit said that Egypt was committed to work towards the success of the UNGA session on promoting children's rights.

"Several elements have had bad effects on children in many parts of the world such as economic crises, debts, epidemics, diseases and others," he added.

Abul-Gheit urged the General Assembly to examine ways to protect children and their rights especially those living under foreign occupation and in military conflict areas.

Within this context, he called for the need to end all military operations and acts of violence against civilians and children in occupied Arab lands, where a Palestinian child continues to live under the worst inhuman conditions.

He expressed Egypt's desire that the special session would enhance international action to promote children's rights though governmental and non-governmental cooperation and institutions and to intensify efforts to mobilize the financial resources and political will needed to protect the child.
