Palestinians not blamed over reaction to Israeli provocation
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 4/7/2001
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa branded as brazen provocation the Israeli government decision to resume settlement activities. The Israeli government invited tenders to construct 700 houses for Jewish settlers in the West Bank.
Moussa dubbed the measures an attempt to impose, by means of violence, a status quo on the Palestinian people in the occupied Arab territories in a flagrant violation of the peace basics and international law.
In statements, Moussa, who has been recently endorsed by Arab leaders as the upcoming Arab League Secretary General, said the Palestinians can not and must not be blamed for their reaction to such Israeli coercive measures.
He underlined the importance of grinding to a halt Israel's provocation so as to avoid any violent reactions.
Moussa said that the return of settlement policies further justifies distrust of Israel and its false desire to resume of peace talks.
"This entrenches the policy of aggression that runs counter to the objectives of negotiations," said Moussa.
Moussa made it clear that such Israeli practices empty the sought-after peace process of its meaning and renders peace efforts futile.
Moussa expressed astonishment as to the convocation of security and political meetings while Israel is proceeding with such settlement policies. "Egypt fully condemns such settlement policies," Moussa said.
In Paris, France has condemned the Israeli military operations against Palestinians. It said that Israel is moving in the wrong path because of its dependence on such policy.
A French Foreign Ministry spokesman said the logic of force and escalation would not lead to a solution.
The spokesman said that we are seeing a devious attitude represented in provocative announcement of sustaining assassinations, military confrontations and occupied territories.
