On the Syrian presence in Lebanon
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 4/7/2001

Lebanese writer Abdul Karim Abu al-Naser has considered that the campaign against the Syrian presence in Lebanon will not actually affect this presence, rather will weaken and embarrass the Lebanese role.

In an article issued on Friday by the Saudi daily al-Watan Abu al-Naser added that despite that this campaign continues, yet, it will not affect the multi-facated Syrian presence in Lebanon, stressing that this very presence is immunized and protected by three solid pillars: the first is that the Lebanese rule: the Presidency of the Republic, the Parliament and the cabinet are officially and openly commited to it, in various Arab and international contacts to the presence of the Syrian military and security forces to Lebanon for a period of time which is not limited.

The writer added that the second of these pillars is the main term of reference for the Syrian- Lebanese relations, represented in the treaty of " fraternity, cooperation and co-ordination" signed between the two countries," noting that it is obvious from the text of the treaty that the decision pertinent to the presence of the Syrian forces in Lebanon or its withdrawal from it is not a decision to be taken by the Lebanese government only, rather the fate of the Syrian forces is decided by the Lebanese and Syrian governments, altogether.

The writer continued that the third pillar is that there is not even one single Arab or foreign states which suggests the withdrawal of the Syrian forces from Lebanon or breaking the remarkable and unionist relations of destiny between Syria and Lebanon, since signing the treaty and several integration agreements between the two states.

The writer, on the other hand, explained that this campaign embarrass the Lebanese rule and weaken it and shows up that there is no national reconciliation and a unanimous stand towards the most important issues facing Lebanon and thereby obstructs the efforts made to improve the deteriorated social and economic conditions and helps in finding out tense conditions that raise numerous question marks on the extent of stability in Lebanon.
