Somalia, Politics, 4/7/2001

The provisional Somali President Abdi Qasem Salad Hassan has announced that the police forces which was formed by the provisional national government in Makadishu wants to guarantee workers in humanitarian establishments who come to the capital Makadishu after the kidnapping of four members of the UN.

News reports said that the Somali President called during a press conference he held on Thursday evening on the UN and non- governmental organizations to inform the government about the visit of its members before their arrival in Makadishu so as the departments concerned with ensuring their safety will be able to organize their efforts, noting that the police will escort these workers to avoid making their security vulnerable.

The Somali President who was appointed in his post after the reconciliation conference held in Djibouti said " we will do our utmost so as to have Makadishu a secure city through strengthening the police and the judicial system." Usually, the UN and the humanitarian agencies use special guards to ensure the security of its workers in Makadishu, where rival war lords control several areas.

On march 27, armed men attacked offices of the " sans frontiers doctors" in the north of the capital when a UN team was inside it.

After a violent war four members of the UN organization were kidnapped and two of them were released on Wednesday.

The Somali President said that the UN team had not to go to an area controlled by the war lord Mousa Sedi Yalhu, without a prior consent from the government.
