A split might occur in one of the Syrian parties
Syria, Politics, 4/6/2001

The central committee of the "Democratic Socialist Unionist party" which is rallied under the "National Progressive Front" the supreme political organ in the country will meet in Damascus today.

This meeting is presumed to elect a new secretary general for the party after the death of its former secretary general Ahmad al-Asaad who occupied this post since 1978.

At the meantime, the Syrian leadership made tremendous changes in the " Baath Vanguards Organization," the first of its kind since its foundation before 29 years.

The post of the secretary general of the unionist party, which is vacant since one month, is under competition of seven members of the central committee which includes 125 members including the son of the former secretary general " Firas" ( 32 year old) who is at the meantime, has the post of the Party's political office secretary.

Observers expect Firas to be the main candidate to win the position, despite the fact there are older rivals for him and who are more experienced politically. A matter which exposes the party to the controversy in its discussions and increases the possibility of its split in case that one of the seven candidates will win with a majority.

" The Socialist Unionist" party was split from the Socialists Unionists in 1978 and was recognized as a member at the National Progresive Front in 1985. It has four members at the Syrian People's Assembly ( parliament), and is represented at the current Syrian government by the minister of state for the environment affairs Farouk Adeli.

On another development, the Syrian leadership has made a great change in the Baath Vanguards Organization which was established in 1974. The first change of its kind in this organization covered four of its former leading figures and kept three of them including its chairman Ahmad Abu Mousa. Woman has for the first time joined this organization by Amira Kazbar, as an actual manifestation to an attitude in the Baath party to revitalize the role of women further in the Baath party organizations.

The new change resulted in expanding the leadership of the organization to cover 9 after it used to have 7 only. The Baath Vanguard Organization BVO includes 3 million Syrian children of both sexes and is concerned with children affairs and their Summer activities.

Meanwhile, Well-informed sources in Damascus said that the National leadership of the Baath party has appointed Mahdi Dakhlullah as the director general and chief editor of al-Baath daily, the mouthpiece of the Baath party. Dakhlullah has a doctorate in the press from one of the socialist countries. He worked at the Baath Party national leadership as an official the studies center of the Baath party general secretariat.

Dakhlullah was appointed in succession to Turkey Saqer who was appointed Syria's ambassador to Tehran after he worked as a chief editor of al-Baath paper since 1981.
