On the Syrian media
Syria, Politics, 4/3/2001
The Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am said on Monday, according to well-informed sources in Damascus, that appointing the chief editor of al-Baath daily Turkey Saqer as an ambassador in Tehran has opened the door of discussion wide on the file to developing the state run media in Syria at all levels.
In its Monday's analysis the paper added that despite sending Saqer to Tehran was decided since several months, however, the successor is not known yet, noting sayings that there will be candidates from outside the paper and the appointment of a new chief editor for al-Baath to be made following a meeting for the country's Baath Party regional leadership.
The paper added that among names said to be candidates for this post are Mahdi Dakhel Allah, a full timer employee at the Baath Party national leadership, Haitham Bataeyhi at the high institute for political sciences; Muhammad al-Omar of Damascus university, Qasem Miqdad a columnist at the paper and the Syrian poet Muhammad Khadour.
The sources explained that one of the main factors which delayed appointing a new chief editor for al-Baath is the possibility of reconsidering other media establishment chiefs, including Khalaf al-Jaraad, the new chief editor in Tishreen, Mahmoud Salamah, the chief editor in al-Thawra and the chairman of the TV and radio establishment Fayez al-Sayyegh and many others.
The paper added the change which was expected in the Syrian media was not made, rather more criticism has been raised on the performance.
