United States should assume its responsibility towards peace process
Egypt-USA, Politics, 4/2/2001
Egyptian President Mubarak has urged US administration to shoulder its responsibility towards peace saying it should interfere as quickly as possible in order to rein in the wave of violence in the Middle East.
President Mubarak said in an interview with the Newsweek magazine that the US administration should not raise its hand off the peace process in the light of the current developments.
President Mubarak said the situation in the region is tense, adding that he would convey this picture to President George Bush during their meeting tomorrow.
The President said Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat couldn't stop acts of violence, adding that the situation may get out of his control.
He said it is difficult for Arafat to ask his people to stop resistance at a time when Palestinians are killed and are subjected to tightened siege.
Meantime, Mubarak said about the reason for failure of Palestinian - Israeli negotiations that "Israel needed a promise that the conflict had come to an end in order to make such major concessions. And you can't get that promise without discussing Jerusalem."
