Mubarak's visit to Washington ushers in a new era of cooperation
Egypt-USA, Politics, 4/2/2001

"President Hosni Mubarak's visit to the United States is very important because it came in a precise timing as there is a new US administration and the Middle East peace process is completely deadlocked due to the escalating tension in the region,"a diplomatic source said.

The Egyptian-American bilateral relations witnessed tangible and fundamental progress over the past years.

All those developments in the region made President Mubarak's visit to the United States and his talks with President George Bush very important.

On the economic level, Egypt seeks to benefit from the new US administration's trend to liberalize trade internationally and boost economic and trade relations with Washington.

On the information technology level, a cooperation protocol will be signed between the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and Microsoft by which a government electronic service project will be installed.

On the political level, the visit is also important as it comes shortly after a visit to Egypt by US Secretary of State Colin Powell who discussed with Egyptian officials the peace process and the Iraqi issue.

The US administration is keen on reviewing resolutions of the Arab Summit that was held last week in the Jordanian capital, Amman.

The itinerary of President Mubarak's visit to Washington includes a tete-a-tete meeting at the White House with President Bush.

A plenary one to be attended by members of the two delegations will follow the meeting.

Mubarak will also meet with Vice-President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and a number of US officials and Congressmen.
