On Eritrea and Ethiopia
Eritrea-Ethiopia, Politics, 4/2/2001
The Organization of African Unity (OAU) on Saturday evening stressed it had received guarantees from the Eritrean authorities on resuming redeployment of its forces in the isolation area between Ethiopia and Eritrea as from April 5th.
News reports quoted the OAU as saying that the government of Eritrea conveyed its decision to the assistant secretary general of the OAU for political affairs ( the Algerian) Saeed Janneh and that the latter, who is visiting Eritrea welcomed, in the name of the organization, this decision and stressed the organization's continued commitment to the Ethiopian- Eritrean peace process.
It was decided to empty the isolations zone from any military presence for the two sides ( the Eritrean and the Ethiopians ) before the third of March in order to have paved the way for UN 4200 troopers in charge of ensuring honoring of the peace agreement signed between the two countries on December 12, 2000 in Algiers following a war which lasted for 2.5 years, waiting for finding an ultimate solutions to the border conflict between the two sides.
