Morocco's upper chamber delegation talks in Washington focuse on economic and Sahara issues
Morocco-USA, Politics, 3/31/2001

Talks held by a delegation from Morocco's upper house, the Chamber of Advisors, and US officials and congressmen focused on Moroccan-US economic ties and the Moroccan Sahara issue.

The group, led by 3rd deputy-speaker of the chamber -Ahmed Kadiri, met under-secretary of state, Alan Keusmetter and head of north Africa at the state department, Albert Dalglish. They also held work session with head of the African commission at the House of Representatives, Ed Royce, and chairman of the senate appropriation committee, Ted Stevens.

The Moroccan delegation explained evolutions of the Moroccan Sahara issue, mainly within the UN Security Council and Morocco's concerted efforts with the UN secretary general special envoy to reach a final settlement that respects Morocco's territorial integrity.

Morocco has always been concerned with the need to spare troubles to the region and has made proposals to help the region overcome artificial obstacles to focus on building the Arab Maghreb Union, which is a more useful goal than attempts to partition human communities at a time the world is moving to economic groupings, they told their US interlocutors.

US congressmen showed keen interest to ongoing changes in Morocco geared towards modernization, promote poorest regions and create jobs.

Exchange of students, university teachers and scholarships between Morocco and the USA were also covered as a means to diversify cultural experiences.

The Moroccan advisors also brought up the Middle East issue and highlighted Washington's potential to promote a fair and lasting peace in the region and Morocco's concerns to establish peace for all peoples and restore to Palestinians their right to an independent state with Al-Quds as its capital.

Since the start of the year, two groups from the US congress have visited Morocco in January and February.

Another delegation, led by republican representative, J.C. Watts, is expected in Morocco next April, part of an African tour to Senegal, Nigeria and Ghana.
