Iran and the three Gulf islands
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 3/31/2001

The spokesman for the Iranian foreign ministry Hameed Rida Asefi has considered the last paragraph of the final statement of the Arab summit conference in Amman concerning the three islands and the standing misunderstanding between Iran and the United Arab Emirates over Abu Mousa islands as "repeated and fully aligned."

In a comment on the final communique of the Arab summit, Aseifi condemned the final paragraph of the summit's final statement. He added that the " Three Iranian islands Abu Mousa, Tanb the Great and Tanb the small have been always Iranians and will remain as an integrated part of the Iranian territories for ever."

Aseifi called on the Arab states to encourage the neighboring state ( the UAE) to join direct and unconditional negotiations "on the misunderstanding between the two countries." He stressed that Iran holds the UAE and the aligned stances of the tripartite committee ( in charge of following up the issue of the three islands) the responsibility of the failure of the committee.

Aseifi continued that Iran still announces its commitment to the principles of good neighborliness, honoring the territorial unity and national sovereignty of others, noting that Iran guards its basic rights to its territories including the "three Iranian islands" and implementing the government's policies. He considered any stances which are unwavering regarding the Iranian sovereignty rights is considered an intervention in an internal affairs of Iran.
