Meetings of water resources ministers of the Nile basin
Regional-Sudan, Economics, 3/30/2001
The water resources ministers of the Nile basin have discussed challenges facing the region as a result of the Israeli ambitions to the Arab waters.
The Sudanese minister of irrigation and water resources Kamal Ali Muhammad said that Israel tries to have control on waters in the Arab region from the Nile, the Euphrates, the springs of the Lebanese rivers, the underground waters in the occupied Arab territories especially the waters of the occupied Syrian Golan.
Ali Muhammad added that Israeli ambitions to the Arab waters are unlimited as it ( Israel) denies the Syrian rights to the Tiberies lake, steal the Lebanese waters and underground water in the occupied Arab territories. He did not rule out that it will try to get water from the Nile through a certain country at the Nile basin, noting the scandalous campaign Israel had fabricated when Lebanon installed a water pump on one of its rivers spring in South Lebanon.
The Sudanese minister, on the other hand, explained that all countries of the Nile basin are committed and had agreed among themselves to fair distribution and best use of the waters of the Nile among their countries, not to make pollution, nor to establish dams, reservoirs or building projects on the river without having the consent of the countries situated on the lower part of the river, and according to the international law.
