Israeli forces bombards Ramullah, al-Khalil and Nablus, two Palestinian killed, seven Israeli killed or wounded
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/29/2001

As confrontation continued between the Palestinians and the Israeli forces and settlers, the US vetoed a decision by the UN Security Council provided for preventing the issuance of a resolution calling for forming a UN observer force to protect the unarmed Palestinian people from the aggressive Israeli practices.

This US veto was received with great regret from Arab and international political circles which stressed that this veto will complicate conditions in the region towards more complexities.

On the other hand, one Palestinian was killed and more than 60 wounded when the Israeli forces fired its missiles from air and from its tanks at targets in the cities of Gaza and Ramullah, including a position for the special guards of the chairman of the palestinian Authority.

A nine year old Palestinian child was killed and other four were seriously wounded when an explosive went off launched by the Israeli forces at houses in al-Brazil's camp in Rafah.

A Palestinian woman Khereyah Mustafa Fashasha ( 70 year old) died after she inhaled poisonous gas sprayed by the Israeli forces at her house in Jei village to the west of Jenin. Medical sources said that Israeli soldiers broke into the village and fired bullets and gas bombs at the unarmed citizens and carried out vast detention campaigns among them.

In Jenin the citizens of the town confronted the Israeli oppressive measures and the confrontation resulted in wounding one Israeli officer and one soldier after their car was exposed to stones thrown by the Palestinians.

Meantime the Israeli forces closed all Palestinian territories including the territories of 1948, and these measures on the approaching of the Land Day on March 30 ( tomorrow). The Israeli soldiers installed more military barriers especially on the roads leading to the settlements for fears of suicide attempts to be made by Palestinians.

Meantime, the Israeli radio said that three Israelis were killed and other 4 wounded in the explosion took place on Wednesday morning in Qalqilya in the West Bank, noting that this incident is a result of a suicide attack by one Palestinian.

The Palestinian national resistance movement " Hamas" claimed responsibility for this attack, stressing that this incident proves the ability of the movement to penetrate all Israeli security barriers.

The Movement also announced responsibility for the explosions which targeted Israeli centers in Jerusalem and the West Bank including the explosion which took place on Wednesday near Kfar Saba, adding that there are other attacks prepared by Ezz eddine al-Qassam groups.

As for the Arab reactions to the US Veto, the Secretary general of the Arab league said that the Arab leaders expressed their regret over Washington's position, while the chairman of the PLO political department Farouk al-Qaddoumi considered the veto as constituting a new complexity for the Palestinian question.

At the world level, the international investigation committee in charge of investigating of the Israeli violations of human rights criticized the US veto noting that there is a need to have an international observer force in the occupied territories and that the UN has to shoulder legal and moral responsibility to ensure such a presence, especially the Israeli forces resort to the extra use of force against the Palestinians.

In Tehran, Iran has expressed regret over the US stand and the Iranian foreign ministry said in a statement this " measure is a flagrant American support to the Israeli intransigence and a support for its crimes."

In Moscow, the Russian foreign ministry expressed its regret because the UN Security Council could not take a decision to deploy UN forces in the occupied territories. The German foreign ministry expressed its concern over the tense situation and the Italian foreign ministry stressed that Israel did not respond to international legitimacy resolutions. A matter which constitutes a weak point in the Israeli position.
