American conditions to nominate Syria for the UN security council
Syria-USA, Politics, 3/29/2001

The al-Watan al-Arabi magazine issued in Paris said in its recent issue that American diplomatic sources said that Washington's support for Syria's nomination to the membership of the UN Security Council will be subjected to political bargaining.

The sources explained that the administration of the US President George Bush will oppose this nomination and will work for preventing Syria from occupying a seat at the UN Security Council unless there will be an understanding between Washington and Damascus over certain basic regional issues.

The sources stressed that the US administration will facilitate Syria's winning of the membership of the UN security council, if the Syrian leadership abides by the UN security council resolutions concerned to the Iraqi problem and if Syria will monitor activities carried out by the Hizbullah party against Israel, as from the Lebanese territories.
