Morocco's tomato exports decline by 15% up to march 22
Morocco, Agriculture, 3/27/2001
Morocco's tomato exports were estimated at 163,999 tons up to March 22, recording a decline of 15% compared to the volume of 195,011 tons exported in the corresponding period of last season.
The association of fruits and vegetables producers and exporters says after a favorable period in the beginning of the season due to a production shortage, tomato prices started to plummet starting last January to reach 2.5 French Francs per kilogram on the French market. The price does not even cover the European duty.
On the local market, tomatoes are sold at a price varying between 0.6DH to 1.10 Dh per kilogram, compared to 5 Dirhams last January. However, the slump in prices did not benefit consumers but only the brokers.
