Morocco-Regional, Politics, 3/27/2001
Morocco wants a new style in cooperation between the Arab states and Africa, said Morocco's minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa.
Speaking to reporters in Amman where he is representing King Mohammed VI in the Arab summit held this March 27-28, the head of the Moroccan diplomacy said it is necessary to ponder on a new style to re-launch Arab-African cooperation, both at the level of states and regional institutions.
He also expressed Morocco's reserves regarding the Arab draft final settlement, submitted by foreign ministers to heads of states, regarding cooperation between the Arab world and the Organization of African Unity which counts among its member a phantom republic that does not have the status of state.
He further recalled Morocco's role in promoting cooperation between the two regions and the decision announced by King Mohammed VI to write off the debts of African least developed countries and exempt African countries' imports to Morocco from customs duties.
The draft final statement calls for intensifying efforts to consolidate Arab-African cooperation and lift obstacles impeding meetings of Arab-African cooperation bodes. The project also asks the Arab League secretary general to carry on contacts with peer of the OAU.
