Moroccan FM: Arab summit comes at decisive turning point
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 3/27/2001

Morocco's minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said the Arab states are well aware that the Arab summit of Jordan (March 27-28) is held at a decisive moment for the Arab nation.

The present Arab current juncture is marked by the advent of a new generation of leaders who have their proper orientations, the emergence of a new civil society and a new system of values, he said expecting the summit to come up with different resolutions from the precedent summits' and reflecting the ongoing mutations.

Benaissa who was interviewed by "Abu Dhabi" satellite TV channel is representing king Mohammed Vi in Arab summit, which opened this Monday in Amman.

For him, the appointment of Amr Moussa, Egypt's foreign minister, as a new secretary general of the Arab League, will give a new impetus to the Pan-Arab organization which constitutes both an appropriate framework for Arab joint action and a body for following up the summit resolutions.

He added that consultations and contacts between Arab foreign ministers held prior to the summit unfolded in total "transparence and frankness" and knew a new spirit of solidarity and understanding. He also denied that the heads of Arab diplomacies were submitted to any kind of pressures while they were preparing the summit agenda and described as "interpretation efforts" assertions on the existence of divergences.

He explained that preparing the summit agenda took them so long because they had a considerable number of issues and hoped that upcoming Arab summits will focus on fundamental issues leaving details to foreign ministers.

Of the Iraqi question, he said it is normal that it holds such an importance in their meetings as the eleven-year-long problem is a complex one that cannot be resolved in two hours.
