Sudan denies news on expelling al-Turabi
Sudan, Politics, 3/27/2001

The Sudanese minister of the Interior Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahim Muhammad Hussein has denied news which talked about discussions held by the Sudanese government with the State of Qatar to transfer the secretary general of the Sudanese People's Congress party Hassan al-Turabi who has been detained for one month under the charge of signing a memorandum of understanding with the rebellion movement in order to undermine the Sudanese regime.

The attempt to expel al-Turabi aims at ending an internal dispute over trying and jailing al-Turabi and to alienate him from the political scenes.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Ayam issued on Monday, the Sudanese minister of the Interior added that these information are groundless and they are an attempt made by the People's Congress party to raise the collapsed morale after its cadres had left it over signing the agreement with the rebellions in order to topple the government and destroy the country and its achievements.

He explained that investigations with al-Turabi and leaders of the People's Congress party who are jailed, are proceeding according to the law.

On Sunday and in a telephone call with the London- based al-Hayat daily al-Turabi's deputy Ali al-Haj said that a governmental delegation from Sudan continues now its tour abroad has asked Qatar to transfer al- Turabi to Doha. But the Sudanese minister denied these news ultimately.
