Intensive efforts to contain inter-Arab differences at Amman summit
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 3/26/2001

The Iraqi-Kuwaiti issue is dominating discussions of the Arab Foreign Ministers' meetings that come ahead of the Arab summit in Amman on March 27-28, MENA learnt.

Egyptian foreign Minster Amr Moussa and his Jordanian counterpart Abdul Elah Al-Khateeb, the Chairman of the Arab Foreign Ministers meetings, are now playing a major role for narrowing viewpoints between both sides for reaching a formula bolstering inter-Arab solidarity.

Moussa noted that the Iraqi side requested ending the international sanctions, placing the issue of Iraqi missing-inaction on the summit's agenda in case Kuwait insisted on raising the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners of war and ending the air embargo over parts of Iraq which, Baghdad argues, was not based on a Security council resolution.

The Kuwaiti stance, according to Moussa, includes tabling the issue of Kuwaiti prisoners of war on the summit's agenda as a separate item and not to use the term "lifting" the international sanctions on Iraq, rather using the term "easing up'' .
