Mubarak's Washington agenda busy

The agenda of President Hosni Mubarak's expected visit to Washington in April includes several meetings at the political and economic levels.

Informed sources told Mena that the first day of President Mubarak's working visit on April 2 includes the Egyptian-US summit in which US President George Bush receives President Mubarak at the White House, where a lunch banquet will be given in Mubarak's honor.

President Mubarak, who arrives in Washington next Saturday, will meet with US Vice President Dick Cheney, United States trade representative Robert Zolick, secretary of commerce Donald Evans and secretary of state Colin Powell.

Mubarak's visit is the first ever paid by an Arab leader to the United States since Bush officially assumed power on January 20.

President Mubarak will hold a meeting with US National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and another with US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld.

The President will also meet with a number of members of the US House of representatives to discuss issues pertaining to the Middle East region as well as bilateral relations.

Mubarak will receive, in his residence in the Blair house in Washington, members of the US foreign relations council.

The visit's economic aspect will comprise a meeting with the US chamber of commerce and the US private sector representatives as the President will deal with Egypt's economic reform, means to buttress economic relations and cooperation between the private sectors as well as upping US investments in Egypt.

Mubarak is to visit the US Congress, where he will meet with democrat and republican legislative readerships and members of the House of Representatives' international relations committee.

Mubarak will also meet with James Wolfeson, President of the World Bank (WB), to discuss Egypt-WB relations.

President Mubarak is to deliver a speech on peace efforts in the middle east and means to get out of the current impasse as well as Egypt's stand towards the recent developments between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

The President will attend a lunch banquet to be given in his honor by the Arab, American and Jewish communities, including prominent economists and businessmen.

The President's Political meetings in Washington will focus on Egypt's view of the Arab and regional issues like peace efforts, Iraq, Sudan and Libya while the economic aspect will deal with furthering Egyptian-US cooperation, augmenting investments and political and legislative efforts exerted to modernize the economic system.

The President's visit comes on the heels of the Arab Summit in Amman, to be held on March 27, providing a chance for Mubarak to convey the views of Egypt and the Arab world to the decision making circles in the United States.

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak's itinerary will focus on issues pertinent to education and health. She will also meet with US first lady Laura Bush.
