Water conditions in the Gulf region are critical
Gulf, Economics, 3/26/2001
The Arab water security conference in the Gulf was inaugurated by a warning against reaching water deficit of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council states (GCC) estimated at 31 billion cubic meters at the beginning of 2025 and that water conditions in the Gulf region have become critical.
The GCC assistant secretary general for economic affairs has warned that the increasing demand for water in the GCC member states increased from 6 million cubic meters in 1980 to 25 million cubic meters in 1995, resulted in increasing water deficit rate to 15 billion cubic meters which is covered by the "unrenewable groundwater."
The chairman of the water resources department at the Arab world Mahmoud Abu Zeid has given a dark image about the future of water, noting that 60% of the Arab water resources come from outside the Arab territories, adding that the scarce water resources in the Arab states coincides with the limited rainfall and use of underground waters.
