Arab congress on woman and poverty calls for creation of fund to back women-initiated projects
Regional, Culture, 3/24/2001

The fourth Arab congress on women and poverty held in Casablanca March 19-23 called Arab governments to set up an Arab fund to back projects initiated by women and promote programs specifically destined to women.

In a final declaration, the congress also called governments to associate ngos and the civil society in all endeavors to improve women's condition and to ensure the follow-up of women-geared national policies and plans.

Participants insisted on information and communication moves, mainly setting up an Arab regional data base on women and a web-site to ease exchange of experience on women-related policies and programs. They also stressed the need to publish a periodical report on Arab women to identify obstacles hampering the improvement of their condition and to conduct studies on the impact of this condition on women's behavior.

The congress called Arab heads of state who will be meeting in Amman March 27-28 to activate the Arab funds set up to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinian people and the impact of the economic embargo imposed on them by Israel and to follow up the implementation of resolutions made by previous Arab summits.

The congress debated more than 50 presentations, reports and documents dealing with the issue of women and poverty, the obstacles to women's participation in political decision-making, the cultural and political obstacles crippling women's participation in the economic development process, the impact of globalization on women, the consequences of poverty on families and other related issues.
