Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/24/2001
News reports from the Palestinian territories said that confrontations between the Palestinians and the Israeli army forces started immediately after Friday's prayers, when the Palestinian demonstrated chanting slogans rejecting the Israeli occupation.
The demonstrations have already changed into confrontation in which the Arab youths attacked the Israeli patrols and army positions in various parts of the West bank.
In Ramullah 17 Palestinians were wounded by the Israeli bullets, while 6 were wounded in Hebron and other 13 in various areas in Gaza.
In Deir al-Balah the Palestinian army officer Osama Hassan salim (25 year old) was killed by the Israeli bullets when the Israeli forces opened fire at a palestinian barrier near Kfar daroum settlement. The body of the Palestinian Jaber Hamdan al-Hanadshah ( 40 year old) was found near hebron and his skill was crushed.
The Israeli forces carried out a vast detention campaign following the explosion which shook Hertzilia on Thursday and resulted in wounding one woman settler and broke glasses of windows.
Palestinian sources indicated that the Israeli forces arrested 6 Arab youths including Ibrahim Shdid from Doura town under the pretext of being members at Hamas and the resistance movements.
A Palestinian statistics released on Friday said that number of Palestinians who were killed so far in the Intifada reached 477 including 162 under 18 and that number of the wounded exceeded 21,000 including 9,999 children and 1694 of them are in critical health conditions.
Meantime, the Palestinian authority stressed that the government of Sharon besieges the Palestinians and is preparing to launch a large- scale armed attack against the Palestinian areas despite the tough security measures.
A statement by the PA said that the government of Sharon also this time targets the Palestinians leaders and seeks to liquidate them and that amid such grave conditions an urgent international interference is a must and that the UN Security Council should send international observers to the region to protect from the " burnt plan" policy carried out by the Israeli forces.
Meanwhile Arafat received on Friday a telephone call from the US secretary of State Colin Powell in which talks dealt with the situation in the occupied lands and the importance of a pressuring American role on Israel to end the siege.
On Friday Sharon said he had set a plan to overcome the Intifada and chase and assassinate its leaders by all means. He continued he briefed the US President George Bush with his plan aims at liquidating the Palestinians who take part in the resistance, to tighten measures of military and economic siege and not to resume the negotiations only after definite suspension of the Intifada.
The Israeli government, on the other hand, approved to build a new settlement including 16,0000 buildings to the south of Jerusalem under the name of " Gheifa'Aout."
The spokesman for the Israeli ministry of settlement Kobi Bleish said that his ministry received a consent to build this settlement.
