Syrian judicial committees call for restoring back dignity to people deprived of their freedom
Syria, Politics, 3/24/2001

Committees in charge of human rights in Syria have called on Friday to restore back dignity to those who were deprived of their political and civil rights for reasons relating to opinions and the volunteering return back of the exiled.

The committees in charge of human rights, as they name themselves, has restored activities in recent months after it had re-elected the council of its secretaries.

In a statement it circulated in Damascus on Friday, the committees " called on specialized authorities to release decisions and decrees provide for restoring dignity to those deprived of that because of reasons that relate to (their) opinion" and permitting voluntarily the return back of exiled to their motherland.

The committees expressed hope that this " matter will be made within a general Amnesty covering the release of all political detainees and constitutes a genuine gate to close the file of the past and furnish up to build up a civilized society in which all creative national potentials take part in order to color it."

The committees called "all forces of the Syrian society of all social strata and positions to consider March 17 as a national day for working to restore dignity back to those who are deprived from their civil rights and the voluntarily return back of exiled Syrians." According to the statement, March 17 is that day when several political detainees and prisoners of the opinion were exposed to sentences issued by the state's supreme court in 1992.

The committees started their open meetings for the first time in one of the Syrian provinces in order to draw a statement and a program for that purpose to be prepared and then submitted to the Syrian leadership.

Earlier the committee said it will apply for licensing from sides concerned after it has amended its name from " the committees in charge of defending democratic freedoms and human rights in Syria" to the " committee of defending human rights in Syria."
