Morocco, Spain explore new cooperation opportunities

Moroccan minister of economy, finance, privatization and tourism, Fathallah Oualalou, and minister of territorial policy and public works of the autonomous government of Catalunia, Pere Macias, explored at a meeting in Rabat Wednesday New cooperation opportunities.

The meeting surveyed the opportunities offered by Morocco to Spanish economic operators mainly in the sectors of tourism, telecommunication, new information technologies, and agriculture as well as the reforms initiated by the Kingdom in preparation for 2010, when the Morocco-European Union association accord will be materialized.

Talks also surveyed the role of Spain as a strategic link in relations between Morocco and the union.

Peres Macias who is visiting Morocco March 19-22 at the head of a 100-member delegation of economic operators and businessmen from the Spanish north-eastern region of Catalunia hailed the progress scored by Morocco at the level of macro-economic stability and improvement of the economic and legal environment of the enterprise.

The two sides also stressed the importance of the just concluded twinning and cooperation accord between the ports of Casablanca and Barcelona.

The accord provides for cooperation in matters of port management, electronic transmission, vocational training and exchange of expertise.

The Barcelona port, by far the most important Spanish port, offers a wide range of services that can interest Moroccan exporters and importers and is serviced by nearly 320 regular lines.

A source from the Catalunia autonomous government had told MAP bureau in Madrid maritime traffic between Moroccan ports and Barcelona port scored a noteworthy increase over the past years, the volume of exchanges between 1995 and 2000 having progressed by 75 per cent. This volume reached 433,000 tons in 2000.

The Catalunia delegation's trip is taking place after the visit president of the autonomous government Jordi Pujol paid to Morocco last February 11-16.
