How the Golanese celebrated Mother's Day
Syria, Culture, 3/22/2001
The Syrians have chosen a valley overlooks part of the Golan height occupied by Israel to celebrate on Wednesday the Mother's Day which was colored with painful scenes of split and torn families.
On this occasion hundreds of students who came from the part situated under the Israeli occupation in the Golan, who follow up their studies at Damascus university, gathered at the side facing the occupied heights in Ein al-Tineh. In the side occupied by Israel mothers wearing white head covers stood and behind them the city of Majdal Shams, the greatest cities of the Golan and its white houses.
One of the students Rifaat Amashi shouted by the loudspeaker, waving by a red flower he could not offer to his mother saying:" how are you mother, happy Eid. How is my father." And the mother replied with a weeping voice " God protects You.. God protects you."
The green valley echoed national songs that came from both sides, heard by the youths with tears in their eyes. In the side occupied by Israel, the Syrian families flied tens of balloons in the air on which Syrian flags are drawn.
