Sharon calls on the US to halt its aid to Egypt
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 3/22/2001

The Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has asked the US to halt its military aid to Egypt under the pretext of Cairo's adverse impact on the peace process in the region.

The Israeli army radio said that Sharon expressed his concern over the aid provided by Washington to strengthen the capabilities of the Egyptian army, claiming that there is no worthy mentioning strategic danger that threatens Egypt.

The radio added that the Lobby in support of Israel at the US Congress has started several days ago a campaign for halting the US military aids to Egypt which reached USD 1.3 billion in the year 2000.

On November 21, Egypt had summoned its ambassador from Israel in retaliation to the attacks carried out by the Israeli occupation army against the unarmed Palestinians in Gaza.

Meantime, the Israeli radio said that Sharon stressed to journalists who accompanied him in his visit to Washington that he will not give up his policy which he had described as firm against the Palestinians in the occupied territories.

Sharon renewed his rejection to resume negotiations with the Palestinians unless the Palestinian Intifada is halted.
