Technology to figure high on Mubarak's talks in Washington
Egypt-USA, Economics, 3/21/2001

Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ahmed Nazif underlined that cooperation with the US in the field of technology will figure high on the agenda of President Hosni Mubarak's talks during his upcoming US visit.

In a press conference late Tuesday, Nazif said he would accompany President Mubarak in his visit, adding that US companies and businessmen would be invited to invest in the promising telecommunications and informatics industry in Egypt.

Among the projects to be proposed to the Americans, a mammoth project by the Egyptian Telecommunications Company (ETC) on installing between one to five million telephone lines over the coming period as well as inviting US companies to join hands in establishing and managing the third cellular phone network in the country.

Asked about the reason behind the US mega international company backtracking on the establishment of computer chipsets in Egypt, Nazif said the company contacted the authorities and sent an expert delegation to explore all details.

'They may have withdrawn their plan because of low stock prices and the political development in the region,' he said.

Asked about objections by the US mega firm on investment incentives, Nazif said that another company will invest some $ 100 million in manufacturing electro-mechanic circuits.
