Arab leaders to tackle four key issues at Amman summit

The Arab summit which will be held in Amman next week will discuss four key political, economic and social issues along with reactivating Arab action.
This is the first time in which all these issues would be submitted to Arab leaders as this is the first periodical Arab summit.
On politics, the Arab League's General Secretariat will discuss the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Iraq-Kuwait situation, Iran's occupation of the three UAE islands, sanctions on Sudan and Arab-African cooperation as well as assistance for Lebanon, Somalia and the Comoros.
The summit will deal with the call by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to send an international protection force for Palestinian people and financial support for Palestinian National Authority (PNA) institutions to cushion the effects of the Israeli siege, in effect for six months.
Arab leaders will discuss activities at the international levels with the United States and member states of the UN Security Council and the European Union (EU) as well as industrialized states in order to salvage the peace process and halt the Israeli aggression.
On the economic aspect, the agenda involves three main items: Joint Arab economic action, the call for convening an Arab economic summit in Cairo in November and furthering Arab cooperation in the field of information and Communication Technology.
The Arab League's Secretariat prepared a memo for economy ministers on these issues, including a review of accomplishments in the area of Arab economic cooperation.
Egypt submitted a memo on obstacles impeding the march of Arab economic cooperation, means to speed up establishment of an Arab common market, liberalization of Arab trade and terminating customs restrictions.
The Arab summit's social aspect will focus on issuing an Arab declaration on children's health, educational and environmental rights, means to ban child labor and care for children with special needs.
The summit's agenda will also tackle joint Arab action and appointment of a new Secretary-General of the Arab League, a post for which Arab countries converged on nominating Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, in succession of incumbent Secretary General Esmat Abdul Maguid.
Qatar tabled a memo to the Arab summit on the importance of activating the role of the Arab league in the upcoming period, particularly after adopting a mechanism for convening the summit on a regular basis.
The summit's agenda leaves space for member states' proposals and themes worthy of research.
