Restoration of the sphinx is sound
Egypt, History, 3/21/2001

Dr. Hawwas head of Giza monuments underlined the safety and soundness of the restoration of the sphinx .

What has been issued in the "Independent" newspaper on the presence of deficient techniques in its restoration works that may cause it to collapse within 25 years , is completely false and void of any scientific evidence, he said.

Hawwas added that Minister of Culture Farouk Hosni has decided to form a committee of archeologists, artists and restorers in order to supervise the restoration works.

Hawwas added that the neck is in a good condition and it has been shored up by limestone and sands without any chemicals . The problem of the sphinx lies in the weakness of the stone of which it was sculpted 5 thousand years ago , but this does not mean that it is going to disintegrate and crumble in the desert within 25 years!
