Saddam expected not to take part in Amman's Arab summit
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 3/21/2001

Iraqi official sources expected in a statement to the London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat in its Tuesday issue that the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will apologize from taking part personally at the Amman's Arab summit on March 27th.

The sources said that the Iraqi President is committed to a personal decision he had taken earlier in not to leave Iraq before the UN sanctions imposed on Iraq since 1990 are lifted ultimately.

For its part, Arab sources told the paper that complex security reasons are behind Saddam's absence from the Amman's summit and previous summits, noting that the Iraqi authorities have fears on the life of the Iraqi president and his personal safety in case he is outside the Iraqi territories due to the numerous local and foreign sides which seek to assassinate him.
