Lebanon-Iran, Politics, 3/20/2001

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on Monday received a message from the Iranian President Muhammad Khatami dealing with Iran's position towards recent developments in the region.

The message was conveyed by the Iranian Foreign minister Kamal Kharazi during his meeting with the Lebanese President.

During the meeting, discussions dealt with developments in the region and Lebanon's position regarding them, especially following the recent israeli threats against Syria and Lebanon.

President Lahoud asked the Iranian minister to convey his greetings and thanks to the Iranian President over the support given by Iran to Lebanon in all walks of life.

Following the meeting, the Iranian minister stressed the need of supporting the Palestinian Intifada. He explained that resorting to the choice of resistance in Palestine is a natural result of the victory attained in South Lebanon and stressed the need of the return back of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland is considered a humanitarian right.

On convening the Arab summit of Amman by the end of this Month, the Iranian Foreign minister said that the most important thing the Summit should attain is economic progress for the Palestinian people which are under strong economic pressures resulting from the economic boycott through which Israel tries to halt the Palestinian Intifada.

He said that it is also the duty of all Arab and Muslim states to support Lebanon economically because lebanon had resisted the Israeli occupation and challenged it.
