Somali President calls for International support to build peace in his country
Somalia, Politics, 3/19/2001

Somalia President elect Abdi Qasem Salat Hassan has called on the international community to help in building peace in his country.

News reports quoted the Somali President in a press statement he made on Friday " we can not implement what is needed from us without having resources," adding that since the formation of the national government, six months ago " we did not receive any aid and we could manage by our local means."

Statements of the Somali President were made following his talks with the representative of the UN secretary general Kofi Annan in Somalia David Isteven and the Un envoy said that the Somali President is keen to deepen the peace process which was launched in Arta and that the UN security council will be meeting in the few coming days to consider the situation in Somalia.

On march 15, the chairman of the national provisional government in Somalia Ali Khaleif Qalaydah said that he had asked the UN to open a permanent office in Makadishu in the framework of " the mission of building up for the sake of peace" approved by the UN security council in January this year.

In the course of preliminary consultations for that meeting, the UN representative also on March 16 in Makadishu met with representatives of Hussein Muhammad Aided who was meeting in Ethiopia with the leaders of the Somali national government's opposition groups.
