New uprising in separatists camps
Morocco, Politics, 3/17/2001
A new uprising has rocked the Tindouf camps, south-western Algeria, where the separatist Polisario is headquartered.
The uprising broke out at the Aousserd camp against the Polisario leadership, Moroccan Assahra Al-Maghribya daily reported.
Hundreds of demonstrators chanted slogans hostile to the Polisario mercenaries (An Algerian-backed guerrilla movement claiming sovereignty over Morocco's southern provinces), the daily said, adding the angry demonstrators decried the repression and the state of emergency decreed by the Polisario and slammed them for skimming funds destined to the refugees.
The demonstrators also claimed their right to return to their homeland, Morocco, and pressed for an end to their captivity in the camps.
The daily underlined that the demonstration broke out after the separatists threatened the detained population to stop giving them food.
In view of the food shortage in the camps, the refugees tried to meet their needs through bringing foodstuff from Mauritania, the daily said, adding this behavior did not please the Algerian authorities who arrested several Sahrawis accusing them of food trafficking.
