Morocco, Health, 3/17/2001
Cancer is the fourth of cause of mortality in Morocco, accounting for 7.8 percent of global mortality in the country, health minister, Thami Khyari said Friday.
The minister, who was speaking at the opening of a meeting held by the National Oncology Institute, cited pre-natal infections, heart diseases and intoxication as major causes of death in Morocco.
Some 40,000 new cases of cancer are recorded annually in Morocco, while cancer-caused death cases stand at 13,770 nationwide.
Morocco has only two cancer centers in Rabat and Casablanca to treat all these patients, said the minister, who deplored the delay in addressing this situation.
The minister underlined that his department is endeavoring to enlarge the cancer-treatment system through the creation of new oncology centers in several parts of the country, including Agadir, fez, Marrakesh, Tangier and Oujda.
The department also strives to train more medical and para-medical staff to reduce the deficit recorded in this field, he said, adding that the ministry will also continue to back humanitarian association active in the field of cancer.
