Meeting of sea research institutes in Maghreb-Mediterranean countries winds up
Maghreb, Economics, 3/16/2001
The meeting of sea research institutes of Maghreban countries bordering the Mediterranean sea held here March 12-15 agreed that the four countries would conduct a joint assessment of shared sea stocks and stage joint campaigns on acoustic prospecting.
Participants equally decided to integrate Algeria in the regional study program on tuna species and agreed to coordinate scientific work strategies within regional bodies and projects and to trade information and experience on sea science research and on fishing regulations.
The meeting agreed to promote fish farming, to enforce a geographic information system, to foster studies on fisheries and to set up an information network on bio-diversity.
A follow-up and assessment committee was set up to identify priority actions. The committee will hold its first meeting before end of April in Libya or in Morocco.
The meeting also featured a workshop on fishery statistics that called for setting up an efficient statistics compilation system on fisheries in the Mediterranean countries.
The meeting of sea research institutes of Maghreban countries bordering the Mediterranean sea is part of the FAO regional project on fisheries cooperation in the Mediterranean. It is meant to promote south-south cooperation and identify topics of bilateral and multilateral research projects.
The FAO regional project on fisheries cooperation in the Mediterranean, that was initiated in 1996 to extend scientific, technical and financial backing to the general commission of fisheries in the Mediterranean, will shortly present to Maghreban countries the program of action for 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Spain and Tunisia are associated to the project. The project budget, worth $1.0 million, is provided by Spain over the 1996-2001 period.
