Morocco's premier calls international community to honor commitments vis-a-vis sequestered Moroccans
Morocco, Politics, 3/15/2001
Morocco's premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi, on Wednesday urged the international community to honor its commitments vis-a-vis Moroccans sequestered in Tindouf (southwestern Algeria) by the Polisario guerilla movement, which claims the independence of Moroccan southern provinces.
"We support law, legality and peaceful means, we are member of the international community and we respect our international commitments," said Youssoufi, urging the international community to live up to its commitments regarding Moroccans forcibly held in Tindouf camps.
The prime minister made the statement to the media on the fringes of the 4th general congress of the Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT/close to the prime minister's USFP), held this March 14-16 in the southwestern city of Laayoune.
"We have made it clear that we will no longer tolerate the sequestration in inhumane conditions of Moroccan women and children," said Youssoufi, who recalled a previous meeting in the city on the women's international day when several Moroccan women's rights advocacy non-governmental organization appealed to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to free the Moroccan women and children held in these camps.
He also announced that the government is preparing an international awareness-promotion campaign over the ordeal and tragedy of women and children.
