Over 2,600 participants in union congress in Laayoune

The Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT) close to the prime minister's USFP) is holding in the southwestern city of Laayoune, its 4th general congress themed "Unity and Democracy," with over 2,600 participants attending.
Speakers at the opening session, including prime minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi, CDT secretary general Noubir Amaoui and chairman of the Moroccan enterprise association (CGEM) Hassan Chami stressed the deep significance of holding the congress in Laayoune as an illustration of Moroccans' attachment to their unity and territorial integrity. They noted that the city of Laayoune symbolizes national unity in its territorial, human and development dimensions.
The CDT chief, who surveyed the situation in the country insisted that perfecting Morocco's territorial integrity with the recovery of Sebta, Melilia and the Jaafarine Island (from Spanish occupation) is the first national cause and requires further popular mobilization.
The prime minister, who praised the CDT decision to hold the congress in this city, underlined the role of workers in Morocco's ongoing political experience and surveyed major reforms and social actions undertaken by his leftist-led coalition government.
The head of enterprise association said it is necessary to carry on the tripartite government-employers-union dialogue to settle development and employment issues, promote development and encourage Moroccan enterprises, in a highly-competitive international context.
For the leader of another trade union (UGTM), the country should activate and carry on efforts to improve the international competitiveness of its economy, increase the labor class and civil servants purchasing power and guaranteeing conditions of development and social justice.
He also stressed close links between the two unions, their joint mobilization for the defense of territorial integrity and interests of the labor class.
The CDT congress was also attended by a delegate from the World Labor Confederation, Ms Katia Paredes Moreno, who stressed the need for international cooperation to jointly face globalization challenges. She went on that workers dignity depends on the respect of trade unions freedoms and improvement of workers situation, highlighting the role of women and their integration in development social progress.
Several officials were attending the opening session, mainly speaker of the chamber of advisors (upper chamber of the parliament), delegates of human rights advocacy association and other non-governmental organizations, heads of public enterprises, local elected officials and authorities.
