Morocco, Politics, 3/14/2001
Secretary general of the Party for Justice and Development (PJD, which is represented in the parliament), Abdelkrim El Khatib, praised in a letter to king Mohammed VI the royal decision to create a committee to study proposed reforms to the personal statute code.
El Khatib who calls the audience granted by the king to a group of women figures "a memorable day," hailed the royal decision to "create a committee comprising specialists, ulema (Islamic theologians), magistrates and all interested sides to look into mechanisms and procedures to secure a sound enforcement of the personal statute code and prepare a reform project as part of Islamic teachings and Islamic law (Sharia) provisions.
For El Khatib, the king has shown "great wisdom over an extremely important issue."
Last week, King Mohammed VI received a group of women figures representing political parties and women associations who asked the king to issue instructions and orientations to render further justice to Moroccan women and help them hold their due place in all walks of national life, mainly as regards the amendment of some provisions of the Moudawana (code regulating marriage, divorce and other family issues).
