Regional-Egypt, Politics, 3/12/2001
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Sunday discussed with Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdel Meguid arrangements for the coming Arab summit in Amman, Jordan.
Arab leaders will meet on March 27 in the Jordanian capital for their first regular summit as agreed upon in Cairo last October.
In a briefing to the press after the meeting, Abdel Meguid said that he had expressed to the Egyptian leader his appreciation of Egyptians' role in supporing the pan-Arab organization.
Abdel Meguid's current term ends in May.
Meanwhile, President Hosni Mubarak has received an invitation from king Abdullah II of Jordan to attend the first periodical Arab summit to be held in Amman on March 27.
The invitation was forwarded by Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdel Elah AL Khatib to the President at a meeting in Cairo Sunday.
The meeting was also attended by foreign minister Amr Moussa and Jordan's ambassador to Egypt Tarrad AL Fayez.
Speaking to the Press after forwarding the invitation, AL Khatib said he listened to the President's views on the items on the summit's agenda, adding that Egyptian-Jordanian viewpoints were congruent.
Both also have the strong desire to render the first of periodical Arab summits successful, which is also the desire of all Arab nations to lay a solid base for Arab joint action and cooperation, he added.
"The phase following the October emergency Arab summit in Cairo represents a new phase of joint Arab action, "he said.
The Jordanian Foreign Minister said the Arab League Council will meet on Monday to agree on the agenda of the upcoming Arab summit.
High on the political agenda comes Middle East peace, the situation in Palestinian lands and the Israeli occupation of Golan and Lebanese lands, he said.
There is an Arab consensus on the need to adopt a clear stand that meets requirements for a just and honorable peace, based on the international legitimacy resolutions, in a bid to clear the Arab atmosphere and examine the issue of Iraq, he added.
"Economic issues are also on the agenda, such as the activation of Arab economic joint action and the mechanism for Arab joint action," he said.
