Embargo killed 1.5 million people in Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 3/12/2001
Nearly 1.5 million Iraqis died because of the embargo imposed on Iraq since August 1990, reported the Iraqi news agency INA.
The sanctions decreed on Iraq caused the death of some 16,000 persons, almost half of them being children, during the month of January alone, INA said referring to figures released by the Iraqi health ministry.
7,813 children below five and 8,212 adults passed away because of diarrhea, heart and respiratory diseases and malnutrition, INA said.
