Saudi - Kuwaiti attitude toward Iraq attending the Arab summit
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 3/12/2001

Jordanian political sources told the Kuwaiti daily al-Anbaa issued on Saturday in Kuwait that the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal has informed his Jordanian counterpart Abdul Illah al-Khatib that the Gulf Cooperation Council states (GCC) had set a precondition to discuss the issue of Iraq at the forthcoming Arab summit in Amman, namely that Baghdad's regime has to halt its media campaign against Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in the Iraqi mass media.

The sources indicated that al-Faisal handed al-Khatib a written message stating that the Gulf states do not oppose alleviating the sanctions imposed on Iraq but this is to be made without violating the international resolutions and linked the Gulf united position towards this matter to Baghdad's halting of its aggressive and provocative attitude against Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The sources remarked that Saudi Arabia and Kuwait stressed that if the question of Iraq during the summit will not be dealt with in the framework of the Gulf understanding, they will refuse to list the issue of Iraq at the Summit's agenda.
